STX moves into ice hockey market

Baltimore sports equipment maker STX will begin selling ice hockey gear this spring as it announces deals Wednesday with the National Hockey League and USA Hockey, the sport's amateur governing body.

STX also will announce a multi-year endorsement agreement with Matt Moulson of the NHL's Buffalo Sabres.

For the past two years, STX has been developing a line of ice hockey sticks and protective gear to complement its existing lacrosse and field hockey businesses.

The on-ice equipment license with the NHL will allow STX gear to be used in the pro league. A four-year partnership with USA Hockey will make STX an official sponsor and equipment supplier of USA Hockey. STX will equip members of the national teams with its products.

"These partnerships poise STX for a long future with the NHL and USA Hockey," said STX President Jason Goger in a statement.

Moulson, a left-winger traded to the Sabres from the New York Islanders in October, has been a prolific goal scorer in recent years. As the face of STX Hockey, he will use its sticks and wear STX gloves once the product is finalized.

"As a lacrosse player who grew up with STX, I was excited when I found out they were getting into ice hockey," Moulson said in a statement.
