Deceptive immigration consultants: Naughty Businesses of the Week

The Maryland Attorney General's office has announced action against an immigration consulting firm that it says falsely advertised that it had lawyers on staff.

Latin Service LLC of Baltimore and its owners have been ordered to stop offering immigration consulting services for its violations of state law, according to the attorney general's office.

Under the Maryland Immigration Consultant Act, only licensed attorneys can assist clients with immigration paperwork, according to the AG's office.

The firm has been ordered to return payments to clients and to stop advertising themselves as "Notarios" --- a term describing notary publics who in some countries are authorized to practice law.

The AG's office has also announced a campaign to increase awareness of immigration scams, including a website and educational materials.

Anyone with questions can call the AG's Consumer Protection Division at 410-576-6577.
