An Edgewood woman, her brother and her boyfriend have pleaded guilty to a bank-fraud scheme involving fraudulent loans, the Maryland U.S. attorney's office said Wednesday.
Latesha Brown, 26, was the ringleader of the effort to use false, modified or stolen identities to get loans from credit unions that employed her, according to the plea agreements. From 2007 through 2010, she accepted forged birth certificates, false vehicle invoices and other fraudulent documents to process or facilitate auto loan applications for herself; her boyfriend, Christopher Houston, a 34-year-old from Edgewood; and her brother, Donald Brown, a 31-year-old from Elkton, the U.S. attorney's office said.
Latesha Brown processed the loans in such a way that liens weren't placed on the vehicles, preventing the credit unions from seizing any assets from the men after they defaulted on the loans, the U.S. attorney's office said. The false documentation also made it impossible for the credit unions to track them down. The U.S. attorney's office did not say Wednesday how much money the trio stole.
