Beverage maker to lay off 55 in Baltimore County

A beverage manufacturer plans to shut down one of its operations in Baltimore County by the end of August, laying off 55 employees.

Diageo, which makes alcoholic drinks such as Johnnie Walker and Smirnoff, warned state regulators that it is closing its special-products building at a production, bottling and warehousing facility on Washington Boulevard in Relay. The rest of the complex will remain open.

The company intends to turn the facility "into one of Diageo's most efficient, cost effective production bottling sites," spokeswoman Brooke Lawer said in a statement Thursday.
