Canusa Hershman Recycling Co. said Friday that it sold a 25-employee Baltimore facility to a competitor, which will require workers to apply to keep their jobs.
Canusa warned state officials that the sale would mean layoffs for the entire site in May, but the company clarified in an interview that it had to file that notice to meet the requirements of a federal law mandating employers report mass dislocations in jobs.
Houston-based Waste Management Inc., which acquired Canusa's sales office and processing plant on Quad Avenue Thursday, promised to offer jobs to anyone who meets their criteria, said Canusa President Jonathan Sloan.
"We expect most if not all employees to be hired," Sloan said.
Canusa is headquartered in Connecticut with additional corporate offices in Fells Point.
