The Baltimore Sun Media Group, publisher of The Baltimore Sun, announced the appointment Tuesday of Joseph D. Brenneman to head advertising sales.
Brenneman, a marketing executive formerly with the Los Angeles Newspaper Group, will take over as senior vice president of sales, replacing Linda Hastings, who will retire this month.
Brenneman had served as senior vice president of sales and marketing for the Los Angeles-based network of nine daily newspapers and multiple websites, weeklies and magazines owned by MediaNews Group.
"Joseph Brenneman's expertise in digital advertising and portfolio sales provides a great benefit to BSMG," Timothy E. Ryan, BSMG's publisher, president and chief executive officer, said. "We have had tremendous growth in both areas over the past several years and know we can rely on him to take us to the next level."
Before joining the Los Angeles Newspaper Group in 2008, Brenneman was vice president of advertising sales for The Orange County Register, Freedom Communications' flagship property. He also worked in advertising management jobs for Knight-Ridder newspapers in Kansas City, Mo., and Lexington, Ky. He graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor of science degree in journalism in 1990 and an MBA in 2001.
"The explosive growth in audience for BSMG websites in particular offers a great benefit to advertisers who take advantage of the visibility, targeting capabilities and advertising solutions available," Brenneman said.
Besides publishing The Baltimore Sun, BSMG publishes baltimoresun.com, 30 community newspapers and magazines, and a portfolio of targeted print and online products that include b and bthesite.com.
