A longtime merchant and property owner on downtown Baltimore's West Side has been named to redevelop several vacant properties for retail and residential use. The Baltimore Development Corp. announced Monday that Carmel Realty Associates of Philadelphia has been selected to redevelop 101, 103, 114 and 116-120 West Lexington Street and 124 N. Liberty St.
Carmel was the only group that submitted a proposal when the BDC sought bids earlier this year on behalf of the city. Its proposal calls for a $2.7 million mixed-use development with retail space on the ground floor and apartments above.
This is the second time in two years that Carmel was selected to develop city-owned properties on the West Side. In 2009, the BDC chose Carmel to convert 109 W. Lexington St. and 119 Park Ave. into a larger complex including the former Kresge building on West Lexington Street as an $8 million mixed-use development anchored by a Valu Plus discount store.
