Avatech Solutions merges with Rand

Owings Mills-based Avatech Solutions Inc., which sells software to engineering, architecture and manufacturing firms, said this week it merged with a Massachusetts company, Rand Worldwide Inc.

Rand, a privately-held company that serves engineering firms, combined with Avatech, a publicly traded company with $35 million in revenue last year.

The companies noted in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that they plan staff reductions that could cost between $800,000 and $1.2 million over the next 15 months, but the location of the job cuts weren't specified.

Avatech has 19 offices across the country, while Rand has dozens of offices across the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia.
