Nearly $45,000 seized from man at BWI

Federal officials seized $44,783 from a Nigerian man traveling through Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport for what officials said was a violation of currency reporting regulations, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Friday.

The passenger, who traveled to BWI from London, declared possessing $5,000. However, while examining his luggage, officers discovered multiple envelopes wrapped in clothing that contained U.S. and foreign currency worth more than $45,000.

"The traveler was given multiple opportunities to truthfully declare his currency," said Susan Thomas, acting customs director for the Port of Baltimore. "The easiest way to hold on to your money is to report it."

Federal law prohibits the agency from releasing the man's name because he was not criminally charged.
