'Unknown substance' in Southwest airplane restroom at BWI prompts fire department investigation

An “unknown substance” found in a restroom of a Southwest Airlines plane at BWI Marshall Airport on Monday night prompted fire crews to meet the aircraft when it landed, the airline said Tuesday.

The Baltimore airport’s fire department boarded Flight 239 from San Antonio just after 8:30 p.m., said Jonathan Dean, an airport spokesman. Authorities tested the substance and determined it to be “paper fibers from a tissue box,” according to a Southwest statement.

“The aircraft has been cleared to return to service,” Southwest said.
