More than $12,000 in unreported currency was seized at Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport Tuesday, officials said.

The U.S. Customs and Boarder Protection Office of Field Operations seized $12,322 from a Nigerian woman for a federal currency reporting violation. Federal law dictates that travelers report amounts beyond $10,000, though there is no limit in how much money they can carry while traveling.

The woman, who arrived via the United Kingdom, reported $9,000, but customs officers found the additional $3,322 in multiple envelopes in her luggage, officials said. Officers returned $322 "for humanitarian release." The woman may petition for the remainder of the money.

The woman, who was not criminally charged, was not identified.

"Travelers who refuse to comply with federal currency reporting requirements run the risk of having their currency seized, and may potentially face criminal charges," Dianna Bowman, CBP Area Port Director for the Port of Baltimore, said in a statement. "The traveler was given the opportunity to truthfully report her currency. The easiest way to hold on to your money is to report it."
