Target starts same-day grocery delivery in Baltimore through Shipt

Target is launching same-day delivery of groceries and other goods in Baltimore and Washington starting March 29.

The mass merchant will offer the service through Shipt, a grocery delivery app that uses personal shoppers to select and deliver products. Target announced plans in December to acquire Shipt Inc. for $550 million in cash and use Shipt’s technology platform to quickly expand same-day delivery at Target stores.

Target and Shipt said in an announcement Thursday that more than 55,000 groceries and home goods, electronics, toys and other products will be available in Baltimore for same-day delivery. Shipt also offers same-day deliveries from Safeway.

Target and Shipt expect to serve a market of nearly 2.9 million households in the Baltimore and Washington region.

“This is just the beginning of the sweeping expansion that Shipt and Target have planned for the coming year,” Bill Smith, founder and CEO of Shipt, said in the company’s announcement. “Through our app, our members have access to everything they need, when they need it, right at their fingertips.”

Same-day delivery is expected to be available from most Target stores in all major markets before the end of the year and for products in all of Target’s major categories by the end of 2019.

Shipt, which was started in 2014 in Birmingham, Ala., lets customers search online from in-store assortments. Customers can note their preferences on groceries and other products, pick a one-hour delivery window and pay for their order using the app. Personal shoppers who work for Shipt select, bag and deliver items. Shipt said it is hiring more than 1,900 personal shoppers in Baltimore and Washington.

New members who sign up before March 29 will pay $49 for an annual membership, which regularly costs $99. Members get free, unlimited delivery on orders costing more than $35.

Shipt, a wholly owned Target subsidiary, is available to more than 30 million households in more than 80 markets and expects to expand to cover 80 million households in 170 markets by the end of the year.
