STX to sponsor women's semi-professional lacrosse league

New league will focus on post-collegiate women lacrosse players.

STX, the Baltimore-based maker of equipment for lacrosse and other sports, will be a partner in a new semi-professional lacrosse league that will provide opportunities for women to keep playing the sport after college.

STX is teaming with Play It Forward Sport Foundation to launch the United Women's Lacrosse (UWLX) league.

The company will be the exclusive equipment sponsor of the new league, which plans to begin with teams in Baltimore, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.

The league will first form an all-star team that will compete in tournaments this summer and fall.

The first full season will start in the spring of 2016 after teams draft 17-player rosters.

"There are very limited post-collegiate opportunities for elite female athletes to continue playing lacrosse," Digit Murphy, Co-Founder of Play It Forward Sport Foundation, said in a news release. "By creating this league, we hope to bring together these talented players and expand the sport."
