BGE reports shorter power outages during historic winter

Despite Baltimore's record snowfall in January, Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. reported Wednesday that power outages were shorter during the first three months of this year.

During 2016's first quarter, BGE customers who experienced power outages had electricity returned to them in an hour and 21 minutes on average, a record low for the quarter, according to BGE.

BGE attributed the shorter duration of power outages to investments its made in making the system more resilient and to changes in how it deploys repair crews.

"Customers expect reliable service, and when outages do occur, the sooner we can restore service, the better," said Stephen J. Woerner, BGE's president and chief operating officer, in a .

A historic 29.2 inches of snow blanketed the city during last winter, paralyzing the region and causing thousands of power outages in the city and surrounding areas. The clean up took days and National Guard Humvees were brought in to assist city emergency responders.

BGE said it has decreased the average power outage duration by 38 percent since 2006.
