T. Rowe Price Group Inc. will hold its first community shred event, intended to teach people how to dispose of sensitive documents without compromising their personal information.
The free event takes place from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the T. Rowe Price Owings Mills Financial Center, located at 4515 Painters Mill Rd. in Owings Mills.
Vangel Inc., a Baltimore shredding and recycling company, will be on hand to shred up to four bags of documents per person.
Old bills, bank statements, credit card offers and any other paperwork that contains personal information should not be thrown in the garbage or recycling bin, which are commonly targeted by identity thieves. Neither should detailed finacial information be stored for too long.
It's also important not to toss too much, even if it's disposed of properly. The Internal Revenue Service, for example, recommends keeping tax records for at least three years.
