Former Millennial Media exec takes reins at QL2, establishes headquarters in Baltimore

Former Millennial Media executive Carl Wartzack has been named CEO of QL2 Software and will establish a Baltimore headquarters for the travel-pricing data company.

QL2 plans to hire between 60 and 80 employees for its new Baltimore headquarters at 3700 O'Donnell St. in Brewer's Hill.

The company has signed a short-term lease for a small office of less than 500 square feet for Wartzack and a few early employees, and will expand — either within the building or elsewhere in the city — as it hires more workers.

QL2 analyzes ticket-price data in real-time to provide price-setting analysis for airlines, rental car companies, hotels, vacation package providers, and other travel and transportation businesses. The new office and CEO come as QL2 looks to push beyond travel to other markets, including retail, government and energy.

The 15-year-old company brought on Wartzack to lead the expansion because of his experience in scaling global businesses, said Paul Campbell, QL2's chief commercial officer.

"We've been looking for a leader, a CEO of Carl's type and talent for quite a while," Campbell said in an interview. "Someone who can help us grow beyond where we are today."

Wartzack most recently worked as senior vice president of global operations for Millennial Media, where was involved in bringing the advertising technology company public in 2012 and growing its global presence. Millennial Media was acquired by AOL in 2015.

QL2 employs 220 people scattered around the world, with concentrations of workers in India and Seattle. The company has at different times called Seattle and Atlanta its home base, but Baltimore will be its first true headquarters, Campbell said.

The company will base its finance and management operations in Baltimore, and establish a core of engineers, taking advantage of the area's technology talent pool.
