Port of Baltimore extends contract with paper company through 2026

The Finnish forest industry giant UPM has agreed to continue shipping its paper products through the port of Baltimore for 10 years under a contract extension announced Tuesday by the Maryland Port Administration.UPM has been shipping its paper through Baltimore for nearly 20 years. The port handled 212,953 tons of UPM paper last year, an increase of 10,000 tons from 2014, officials said.The extension took effect Aug. 1 and replaces the last 10-year contract, which was scheduled to end in 2018.&quot;Long-term contracts are vital in supporting jobs that pay well at the Port and we are pleased to continue our successful partnership with UPM for another decade,&quot; Gov. Larry Hogan said in a statement. &quot;The Port of Baltimore has long been one of the leading forest product ports in the U.S., and much of that success is due to the presence of UPM.&quot;Angelo LaMantia, vice president of UPM's North American supply chain, called his company's relationship with the Maryland Port Administration &quot;our strongest asset.&quot;&quot;The partnership has been a catalyst for both the MPA and UPM to grow and succeed over the years,&quot; LaMantia said in a statement.The port of Baltimore has been on a roll in the past year. Carnival Cruise Lines recently agreed to continue calling Baltimore with cruises to the Bahamas and the Caribbean Sea for two more years. Royal Caribbean Cruise agreed in March to extend its year-round service through 2020. The Journal of Commerce named Baltimore the most productive container port in the United States. Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics agreed to continue shipping vehicles through the port for the next 30 years.All that came as the port posted record volumes of containers and cars in 2015.cmcampbell@baltsun.comtwitter.com/cmcampbell6
