The Prince George's County Council on Tuesday shelved a zoning bill that would have effectively banned slots in that county.
Instead, the council approved a resolution in a 5-to-4 vote that would essentially leave the controversial issue in the hands of the Maryland General Assembly and county voters. The resolution conditions the approval of slots on a majority vote of county residents in a statewide referendum.
Prince George's County is not one of the five designated slots locations in the state. Expanding the state's slots program would require the passage of a statewide referendum to change the Maryland Constitution.
