Mud and Metal in Hampden will close this month

Mud and Metal, a functional art boutique and a fixture in Hampden for more than two decades, will close its doors May 12.

Owner Carol Breining said she has decided to move on from running her own retail shop and has put the store building, at 1121 W. 36th St.. up for sale.

Breining opened the store in 1995 in the 800 block of W. 36th St. and moved to the current location in 2006.

Over the years, she has displayed and sold the work of hundreds of artists.

“I tried to bring artists here who had not been shown in Baltimore, as well as local artists,” Breining said. “I also appreciated the reactions of the customers when they would see or buy something new they couldn’t create themselves.”

Breining said her own collage pieces are displayed in the shop, but she mostly enjoyed arranging the work of other artists, as many as 85 at one time.

The store owner said she has not decided on her next career move, but hopes to continue to support artists, either by finding them space or connecting them with buyers.

Mud and Metal will run closing sales the weekends of May 5 and May 12.
