Casinos like to open with flourishes, and the $1.4 billion MGM National Harbor said it has scheduled singer Bruno Mars and other well-known acts for its first month in December.
The casino, Maryland's sixth, is scheduled to open Dec. 8.
General manager Doug Boasberg told the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency at a recent meeting that the opening-month lineup includes Mars on Dec. 27, Lionel Richie on Dec. 22 and Duran Duran on Dec. 31.
"Ticket sales have been through the roof for us," Boasberg said.
Horseshoe Casino Baltimore — the last Maryland casino to open — had lines around the block and a performance by pop-rap artist Iggy Azalea on its first night in August 2014.
MGM National Harbor says it will be a "destination" resort attracting more than half of its business from outside the state.
It will include a spa, theater and restaurants, including a pastry shop with a 26-foot-tall chocolate fountain. Art in the resort's public spaces will include a metal sculpture by Bob Dylan, the singer-songwriter.
