The Attorney General's office on Wednesday said the owner of two Glen Burnie burial firms violated the Consumer Protection Act, accusing him of accepting thousands of dollars in advance payments for goods, such as gravestones, that in some cases were never delivered.
The allegations against James Kinsey of Ellicott City and his firms, Maryland Memorials LLC and Maryland Memorials by Kinsey Inc., do not say how many customers were affected. Kinsey could not be reached for comment.
The Consumer Protection Division is seeking an order to require return of payments, as well as $1,000 for each violation, including late deliveries or incorrect deliveries. The firm also did not place advance payments in a protected escrow account.
The Maryland Office of Administrative Hearings is scheduled to hear the case July 16.
Consumers with complaints against either company or Kinsey may call the Consumer Protection Division at 410-576-6569.
