The retailer announced the Baltimore-area Macy’s Backstage openings Monday, along with others that will open in Centre at Salisbury in Salisbury and St. Charles Towne Center in Waldorf.
Backstage will open in White Marsh June 2 and in Annapolis June 16.
Backstage is run by its own team of Macy’s buyers and offers a changing assortment of trendy merchandise at discounts of 20 percent to 80 percent off department store prices, Macy’s said. It will offer apparel and accessory brands not found in full-line stores, as well as Macy’s regular merchandise.
The chain now operates the concept in two Maryland Macy’s, at Lakeforest Mall in Gaithersburg, and at The Mall at Prince Georges in Hyattsville. In department stores that are typically close to 200,000 square feet, Backstage takes up about 15,000 square feet.
The retailer, which operates about 650 stores in 44 states, offers the Backstage concept in 55 stores. But the chain plans to open an additional 100 Backstage locations this year, including the new Maryland locations.
The Annapolis Macy’s, a key location for the chain, is part of its Growth 50 initiative. That store and 49 others within the group stand to get investments in fixtures and facilities and in-store technology and more attention to marketing and community engagement.
