The Maryland Lottery is joining 23 other states in offering a new weekly game, Monopoly Millionaires' Club, that it says offers three ways to win and will generate "more millionaires than any game in lottery history."
The top prizes of $15 million to $25 million can be won by matching five numbers – plus a randomly-generated "Monopoly property number." The drawings are to be held every Friday night.
A winning, $5 ticket of a top prize in any state will generate a second drawing. In that drawing, at least 10 players are guaranteed $1 million cash prizes based on a randomly-generated "Millionaires' Club" number on every ticket.
The ticket also offers a chance to be in the studio audience — and perhaps become a contestant — at a Las Vegas game show.
Each ticket provides a code allowing players to register the name of a property on their tickets – such as "Pennsylvania Avenue" – derived from the iconic Monopoly board game. A player collecting a complete set of properties (a "monopoly") can participate in a drawing to be in the studio audience, and perhaps become a contestant.
The Maryland Lottery now offers 11 different types of games, including this one.
The first drawing is Oct. 24. The TV game show is scheduled to begin in early 2015.
To promote the game, 100 participants in Saturday's Baltimore Running Festival are to don top hats and tuxedo T-shirts, according to the Lottery and Gaming Control Agency. A man outfitted as Mr. Monopoly has been visiting media outlets with promotional material.
