The Maryland Lottery said Monday it is suspending sales of a new, weekly, multi-state game — Monopoly Millionaires' Club — following the Dec. 26 drawing because sales have not met projections.
The other 23 states involved in the game also are suspending sales.
"This is a necessary business decision," said Maryland Lottery Director Stephen Martino. "Research indicated that players were looking for a game like this. Unfortunately, they have not embraced the concept as anticipated. We believe it is appropriate along with the other states selling the game to step back and assess the game's future."
The game began in October, saying it offers three ways to win and will generate "more millionaires than any game in lottery history."
The top prizes of $15 million to $25 million can be won by matching five numbers — plus a randomly-generated "Monopoly property number." The drawings are Friday nights.
In the nine drawings since the game began, Maryland had one $1 million Millionaire Club winner, according to state lottery officials, and six $20,000 winners.
