JetBlue Airways will begin twice-daily nonstop service from BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in November, the airline said Thursday.
The airline first began service out of BWI in September 2009, with flights to Boston.
The new service between BWI and Fort Lauderdale will "give Maryland and Washington area residents a convenient option to get away and enjoy many of South Florida's premier leisure destinations, as well as the ability to connect on to JetBlue's diverse network throughout the Caribbean, Central and South America," the company said in a release.
The move could be seen as a way to compete with Southwest Airlines. Southwest, which operates more than 70 percent of BWI's flights, has also been expanding service out of the Anne Arundel County airport — including to Caribbean destinations.
Jonathan Dean, a BWI spokesman, applauded the JetBlue news.
"JetBlue is a terrific airline, widely known for its customer service and value," he said. "The added service will offer our customers convenience and further options."
