Hotel at BWI Airport to close next month

The Four Points by Sheraton BWI Airport, the only hotel on airport property, will close at the end of November when its 30-year lease expires, said Kevin Carnes, the hotel's general manager.

Carnes said several factors, including the end of the lease, played a role in the decision to quit the property even though the Maryland Aviation Administration, which owns and operates the airport, offered a short-term extension of a few years.

The 201-room hotel needs to be updated and the renovations would likely be more than $2 million, a hefty investment for a short term, he said.

The Maryland Aviation Administration is trying to find another manager to run the hotel for five years, with the possibility of an extension, The administration also is considering building a new hotel on the property connected to the airport.

Four Points has employed nearly 110 full- and part-time employees, and Carnes said he has found new jobs for 40 full-time staff.
