The Maryland Department of Natural Resources will open 300 acres of Hart-Miller Island State Park to the public on Friday.
Hart-Miller is a 1,100-acre island built largely by dredged materials at the mouth of the Back River on the Chesapeake Bay. It was previously two small islands, Hart and Miller, but was made into one island in the early 1980s.
The section that is opening Friday is known as the south cell where dredging crews have pumped millions of cubic meters of dredged muck from Baltimore's harbor and channels.
The island is a popular destination for recreation and bird watching that is only accessible by boat and has 3,000 feet of sandy beach.
