Golfsmith in Timonium is closing as part of the golf equipment and apparel chain's bankruptcy.
Closing sales have started at the store in Lutherville Station shopping center and 58 other Golfsmith stores nationwide, the companies handling liquidation sales said Friday. All merchandise is discounted up to 30 percent. Golfsmith gift cards and merchandise credits will be honored at closing stores through Nov. 11.
Golfsmith International Holdings, based in Austin, Texas, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September, citing waning interest in the sport in North America. The company reported debt and assets of as much as $500 million each in bankruptcy court in Delaware and said it planned to put part of the chain up for sale and close some stores.
A joint venture of Gordon Brothers, Hilco Merchant Resources and Tiger Capital Group is handling the sales.
The chain operates 150 stores under the Golfsmith brand in the United States and the Golf Town brand in Canada. The retailer is owned by OMERS Private Equity Inc., a part of the Ontario municipal employees' pension fund.
Golfsmith merged with Canada's Golf Town in 2012 to form the world's largest specialty golf retailer.
