Giant Food has started selling HelloFresh meal kits in its stores, the grocer announced Tuesday.

Through a partnership with the second largest meal kit provider in the United States, the supermarket chain will offer five exclusive meal kits in all 166 Giant stores in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Washington.

The new offerings, sold in the delis, are part of the food retailer’s strategy of expanding prepared foods in stores to meet consumer demand.

“The partnership with HelloFresh was a natural fit,” said Tonya Herring, Giant’s vice president of merchandising, in the announcement. The retailer is targeting “customers that may not have as much time to spend cooking at home.”

Supermarkets look to sustainability as the next organic

Giant Food launches pilot sustainability ratings program as more and more consumers want to know how their food is grown and made, and retailers look for ways to give them information in a digestible way. One grocery analyst dubbed sustainability one of the year's top grocery trends as consumers begin to embrace the idea much as many started seeking organic products in recent years.

Kits, with recipes such as Chickpea Couscous, Paprika Chicken, Peppercorn Steak, Mediterranean Style Chicken and Homestyle Meatloaf, contain pre-cut, pre-measured and pre-washed ingredients and serve two people. Meals are expected to take less than 30 minutes to prepare and range in cost from $14.99 to $19.99 per kit.

HelloFresh is an international company based in Berlin, Germany.

Giant also is expanding prepared food options by adding or increasing hot bars and quick-serve stations serving sushi, sandwiches, smoothies, the company said.
