Giant Food, the Baltimore area’s largest grocer, will complete an expansion this month of its distribution warehouse in Jessup, in part to supply products for home delivery.
A larger warehouse is needed to boost capacity for high-demand categories such as organics, fresh produce, meat and seafood as well as other merchandise such as floral and seasonal products, the grocer said. It also will supply products for Giant Delivers, the chain’s home delivery service.
Giant is adding more than 95,000 square feet, a 23% increase, to the facility, which serves all 163 Giant Food stores in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Washington. The expansion will create 30 additional jobs. Landover-based Giant employs about 20,000 people in the region.
The improvements, also designed to increase efficiency, will enable further growth in the area, Joe Urban, Giant’s vice president of distribution operations, said in an announcement Monday.
The upgraded space will include technology and equipment to improve traffic flow and enhance productivity.
