Maryland's average gas prices fell another four pennies over the weekend, dropping below the national figure and to a level not seen in nearly four years, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic.

The organization reported the current average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline as $2.99, down from $3.32 on Oct. 1. The state average has not hit $2.99 since December 2010. The current national average was $3.04.

The average of $2.95 in the Baltimore area was the second lowest average in the state, where prices ranged from $3.11 in Cumberland to $2.90 in Salisbury.

Gas prices are expected to drop in the fall due to slackening demand and a switch to less expensive winter gasoline blends, but not this much, Ragina Cooper Averella, public and government affairs manager at AAA Mid-Atlantic, said in a prepared release. She said prices could drop a bit more before stabilizing, and she expected they would rise again in the spring.
