Dick's Sporting Goods will hire 100 people for holidays at Baltimore stores

Dick’s Sporting Goods plans to hire 100 seasonal workers to boost staffing at its nine Baltimore-area stores during the upcoming holiday shopping season, the retailer said Wednesday.

The sporting goods chain plans to fill 5,000 seasonal job openings Oct. 24 during its “National Signing Day” nationwide hiring event.

In the Baltimore area, store positions are available in Bel Air, Columbia, Crofton, Ellicott City, Frederick, Glen Burnie, Hunt Valley, Westminster and White Marsh.

Retail hiring is expected to reach 704,000 seasonal jobs this year, beating 2014’s record of nearly 696,000 seasonal jobs, Challenger, Gray & Christmas said Wednesday. The global outplacement and executive coaching firm noted that Amazon expects to hire about 100,000 seasonal workers.

"The competition for seasonal workers is intense, especially as companies expand their compensation and benefits offerings," said Andrew Challenger, the firm’s vice president, in a statement.

Dick’s, a Pittsburgh-based seller of sports equipment, apparel, footwear and accessories, is seeking applicants who can draw on personal experience and knowledge about sports to help customers. The retailer said it is offering competitive pay and store discounts of up to 25 percent. It is encouraging candidates to first apply online at dicks.com/jobs before visiting a store on Oct. 24 for an interview.

Dick’s runs 729 stores across the United States.
