Crate & Barrel will close Towson mall anchor store

Crate & Barrel plans to close its mall anchor store at Towson Town Center early next year.

The housewares and furniture retailer will lay off 37 employees at the Towson location by Feb. 7, according to a job loss notice filed with the Maryland Department of Labor.

The closing will leave only one Crate & Barrel store in Maryland, at Westfield Annapolis mall in Annapolis.

Crate & Barrel’s Towson location opened in 2008 in the mall’s then-newly constructed, 100,000-square-foot luxury wing. The wing opened amid a faltering economy but once included tenants such as Tiffany & Co. and Louis Vuitton.

Current tenants in that wing include Apple, Sephora, Tory Burch, Lacoste and Michael Kors.

Crate and Barrel, part of the Otto Group, operates more than 100 stores. Company representatives could not be reached Tuesday morning.
