N.C. telecom support firm acquires Md. companies

A North Carolina company that does construction and maintenance work for telecommunications, cable and utility companies said Tuesday it has acquired two Maryland firms, deepening its presence in the state.

S&N Communications closed on the deal to buy Joppa-based Tower 16, Inc. and Columbia-based SCE Inc. last week, a spokeswoman for the firm said. Terms were not disclosed.

The two Maryland firms, which will continue to operate under their current names, bring expertise in wireless, which S&N considers a growth area, the firm said in a press release. The firm also performs locating services, construction and maintenance for fiber and copper infrastructure and electrical lines.

S&N has been expanding, merging with a Utah-based company in February. Before the acquisition, the firm employed nearly 1,000 people in 35 states, including Maryland. The number of workers at the two new firms was not immediately available.

"S&N is growing quickly, both organically and through acquisitions," said Allen Powell, CEO and president of S&N Communications. "Our growth strategy is well planned, looking at the capabilities, strengths and footprint of any companies we consider acquiring. The acquisition of Tower 16 and SCE perfectly fit the qualifications we were after and will be very advantageous for our company, our customers and our employees."

Ed Humes, president of Tower 16, is to lead the two Maryland companies, reporting to Powell.
