The transformation of the former Cardinal Gibbons School into a mixed-use development took another step forward Tuesday with the formal opening of the first residences at the site.
The Bon Secours Gibbons Apartments include 80 new units. They were developed by Bon Secours Baltimore Health System through its subsidiary Unity Properties. The group worked with Enterprise Homes on the project, which was financed in part by low income housing tax credits and projected to cost about $20 million.
The 32-acre Cardinal Gibbons site was purchased by Saint Agnes Hospital in 2012. Officials also have discussed adding offices, retail and more housing to the site.
"The healthcare industry continues to change and Saint Agnes Healthcare is working to be as relevant to people when they are well as when they are sick," said Keith Vander Kolk, vice president of Ascension Health and president and CEO of Saint Agnes Healthcare, in a statement. "Gibbons Commons supports that direction."
