Baltimore-based Calvert Education Services has appointed education company executive Steven C. Gross as its new CEO.

Gross had been senior vice president of marketing for the school business segment of Pearson Plc, a London-based education and publishing company, and previously worked as a manager for Lexis Nexis, Lycos and Pepsi Cola Co. He will report to Calvert's board of governors and board of directors and live in Baltimore.

Nancy Grasmick, chair of the board of governors and a former state superintendent of schools, said in the announcement that Gross has the experience to help Calvert expand its mission. Calvert offers program and instructional curriculum to students through home schooling products and school support.

"As more individuals and institutions reach beyond the classroom to educate our children, Calvert will play an increasingly prominent role in developing distance learning initiatives and curricula that touch thousands of children around the world," Grasmick said.
