The Maryland Public Service Commission and the Maryland Office of the People's Counsel joined with regulators and ratepayer advocates in Delaware, New Jersey and the District of Columbia to refile a complaint this month that seeks to reduce the profit Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. and Pepco Holdings Inc. earn on electricity transmission.
The complaint, filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, seeks to reduce the maximum amount of profit BGE and Pepco Holdings can earn when maintaining, replacing or building electric transmission infrastructure.
If federal regulators agree, it could mean a multi-million dollar reduction in annual profits to the companies and a refund to BGE and Pepco Holdings customers. The impact on customer bills is estimated to be relatively small, though customers could see a rebate.
The initial complaint was filed in February 2013, and the parties refiled it this month to take advantage of a complicated FERC rule. Case proceedings are expected to continue through 2015.
Aaron Koos, a BGE spokesman, declined to comment.
