Neurosurgeon turned potential presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson has joined the board of HomeCentris Healthcare LLC, a Baltimore company that helps the elderly receive care in their homes rather than in hospitals or nursing homes.

HomeCentris CEO Matthew Auman said Monday that Carson brings "a wealth of knowledge and leadership" to the company.

The company provides nurses or other caregivers for in-home help, and brings nurse practitioners and physical therapists to senior living complexes to provide on-site care.

Carson serves on the boards of a variety of companies and institutions – in August, another health-focused company in Maryland, Vaccinogen Inc., named Carson its chairman. Vaccinogen is developing a cancer vaccine and last month moved from Frederick to Baltimore.

Carson is also a member of the boards of directors of the Kellogg Co. and Costco Wholesale Corp.

Earlier this month he announced he is formally exploring a run for president in 2016.
