How she got started: While attending Towson University to pursue a mass communications degree, Jill Pasco worked part-time at a mortgage company as an assistant loan officer. After graduating, she took on the full-time job of preoperative coordinator at the Cosmetic Surgery Center of Maryland. About six months ago she also began working as the financial coordinator for the company.
Pasco said she uses her mass communications skills every day. "I didn't want a job where I was sitting behind a desk. I love speaking with people and meeting new people, and that's exactly what I get to do here."
Typical day: Pasco's role as financial coordinator is in direct response to the slumping economy. Before, patients had to secure their own means of financing to pay for cosmetic procedures. Now, she can help them apply for a loan to companies that specialize in cosmetic surgery financing.
After a person commits to having cosmetic surgery, Pasco helps patients prepare their credit application and checks their credit score so she can direct them to one of about five companies that offer financing. The typical loan is between $7,000 and $10,000 and can be financed up to 60 months. She estimates that about 50 percent to 60 percent of patients choose to finance the procedure. It takes about two days to find out if they are approved.
"We can help people get into loans and get them on the schedule a lot quicker," Pasco said. "It's an added service we offer. We knew the economy was changing, and we had to change with it."
Pasco also meets with all patients for their preoperative and postoperative appointments. Once a patient has decided to schedule surgery, Pasco will take a little over an hour to explain the procedure, advise them on any preparation they have to do and what to expect after. She'll also try to reassure them if they're nervous about the decision. She estimates she meets with 15 to 20 patients a week who are preparing for surgery.
During the postoperative visit, she'll check in and find out how the patient is doing and answer any follow-up questions. Pasco also takes the before and after photographs of patients.
"I get to know the patients really well," Pasco said.
About once a month she'll attend events and seminars to promote the Cosmetic Surgery Center of Maryland.
The good: Getting to know the patients. However, she also enjoys working with patients to get financing so they can move forward with the cosmetic surgery procedures. "I feel like they are fulfilling their dreams and I get to help them with it."
The bad: When patients are denied financing. "It doesn't happen often, but when it does, it sticks out."
