On April 27, police responded to rumors on social media by confronting students and others near Mondawmin mall. That encounter between heavily equipped police and residents -- including many looters -- kicked off some of the city's worst property destruction in years, with businesses around Baltimore ending up damaged or burned. Officials estimate that staffing and repair costs from the Baltimore unrest will add up to about $20 million. Stories from shop owners show riot damage was widespread.
