Under Armour's Kevin Plank has invested in a Baltimore-based tote and duffel bag maker and shop.Plank's Sagamore Ventures LLC has invested an undisclosed amount in Treason Toting Co., started in 2013 in by Baltimore craftsmen Jason Bass and Aaron Jones. The maker of leather and canvas bags and wallets opened a shop earlier this month on Thames Street in Fells Point.Sagamore, the venture capital subsidiary of Plank Industries, said it will provide resources for Treason Toting to make nearly all its products in Baltimore, increase speed of production and boost the global awareness of its brand."With this investment in Treason Toting Co., we are excited to raise the profile of a brand born right here in Baltimore," said Tom Geddes, CEO of Plank Industries, in an announcement Wednesday. "We will help Treason Toting keep and grow its operations in Baltimore, creating many local jobs over time and inspiring other minority entrepreneurs. This is central to our mission."Bass and Jones, both from Baltimore, started the company four years after being introduced by friends. Jones had graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design and was working as a tailor and nighttime water taxi driver. Bass was working toward his MBA at the University of Baltimore. The two were interested in blending design and function.Treason began selling its first product, weekender duffel bag "The Gordon," in 2013 and targeted products to the "creative class.""Our products appeal to the office worker that carries his tools of trade in his bag while trekking from work to play, but is always prepared for the unexpected opportunity," Bass said in the announcement.Its products range from a dopp kit that sells for $59.99 to a $249.99 backpack.Sagamore's financial backing will allow Treason to increase distribution and bring in house projects the company had outsourced. All the bags are now designed and made in Treason's more-than-1,600-square foot factory, space the company is leasing at City Garage in Port Covington. The Sagamore-owned City Garage was designed as a space for manufacturing entrepreneurs.Sagamore has invested in companies such as Maryland-based skateboard maker Bustin Boards, flower delivery company Urban Stems and Towson-based watchmakers Towson Watch Co.The venture capital firm also is expected to buy Harbor Boating Inc., the company that operates the city's Inner Harbor water taxis.Demian Costa, Sagamore Venture's managing partner, said he was looking for investment opportunities in manufacturing and saw Treason's products as reflecting the city's growing entrepreneurial spirit."We want to be able to leave a legacy in Baltimore, something our grandkids can point to and say 'Our grandparents started that.'"lorraine.mirabella@baltsun.com
