You could call it the house that canned spaghetti built, but the Penderyn Estate in Queenstown is grander than that.
The 22,500-square-foot mansion was built in 1989 for Mario Boiardi, a Mid-Atlantic businessman and son of Hector Boiardi, the New York City chef who created the Chef Boyardee brand of products. The property, originally listed for $29 million, will be auctioned July 19 by DeCaro Luxury Real Estate Auctions.
Mario Boiardi, who died in 2007, and his wife, Maureen, sold the home to Morgan O'Brien, the former CEO of Nextel. O'Brien put the estate on the market a couple of years ago but it didn't sell because of the recession, the auction company said.
The interior includes a grand foyer, hallways, high ceilings and sunny windows. Designed and furnished in Georgian style, the home features antique crystal chandeliers, elegant entryways and glossy oak paneling that give it Old World ambiance.
"It seems as though the Bioardis didn't spare a penny on the construction of the estate," said Daniel DeCaro, founder and president of the auction company. "It is in absolutely pristine condition, and the amenities are all remarkably up-to-date."
Each of the eight bedrooms features its own bathroom and the home also includes three half-bathrooms. The estate has 11 wood-burning fireplaces and a formal dining room that seats 22.
"Chef Bioardi's wife imported all kinds of architectural mantels from France and England; that was really the standard for 18th-century-style homes," says DeCaro.
A conservatory with a hand-painted trompe l'oeil ceiling leads into the drawing room, the gallery and the billiards room.
The master bedroom, located on the second floor, features a private balcony and reading room, along with a huge bathroom with marble floors and antique gold details.
Located on the Wye River, the home sits on an 18-acre peninsula and has amenities that include courtyards, an in-ground pool, a sauna and poolhouse. A 157-foot dock with 11 boat slips is available for purchase on an adjacent lot.
The auction has no reserve and tours of the space are being offered from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday until July 19.
"The Penderyn estate is unparalleled to any property on the Eastern Shore. In size and opulence, it is mind-blowing," says DeCaro. "From what I've seen, it is the nicest property in Maryland."
