HCYP Hokies win 9-10 basketball championship

The fourth grade Virginia Tech Hokies recently secured the 2013-14 HCYP boys basketball championship. The Hokies had a perfect 9-0 season, leading the league on both ends of the court. The 9- and 10-year-olds averaged a league-high 40 points per game while allowing a league-low average of 25 points. Team members include Brendan Flynn, Dakota Hawkins, Jeffery Liu, Sarantis Markaris, Shea Nesbit, Christopher Pamukcoglu, Jamie Plano and Brandon Scott. The Hokies are coached by Mike Pamukcoglu, and assisted by Tim Flynn and Brett Plano.

Field hockey

The Howard County Warhawks field hockey club recently played in the USA Field Hockey National Indoor Tournament in Lancaster, Pa., placing fourth in their pool. The team includes Gabby Wells, Julia Roling, Olivia Smith, Victoria Strasser, Jaden Ross, Maddie Bacon, Sarah Gobell, Emily Bacon and goalie Olivia Gretz.


The CVC 14U Condors placed first in the Silver division out of 12 teams, taking home the Gold medal in the MVSA 14's Invitational at McDaniel College on March 2. The team was seeded first in the Silver division going into the playoffs. They defeated NVVA 14 Purple in the semifinals, and won against  CVVA 14 Pythons in the finals.  Members of the team are, Mikayla Hansen (Marriotts Ridge High School), Kennedi Holloway (Calverton), Lydia Jones (William H. Farquhar Middle), Megan Kane (William H. Farquhar Middle), Valerie Odonkor (Bethel Christian), Emily Przybyla (Ellicott Mills Middle), Alexandra Stanislavsky (Burleigh Manor Middle), Alexa Welch (Ellicott Mills Middle), Madeline Winters (Hammond Middle) and Lisa Zoch (Clarksville Middle).

The Columbia Volleyball Club 12U Canaries placed second out of eight teams from across Maryland, Virginia and Delaware, winning the Silver medal in the Columbia 12 Invite (Mixed) Tournament on March 2. Losing only one match in pool play, the Canaries went on to compete for a spot in the championship game against the Delaware Juniors. In a hard-fought battle, the DE Juniors won the first set 25-18. The Canaries rallied to win the second set, 25-18, resulting in a tiebreaker which Delaware won 17-15. Members of the Canaries are: Julia Tallent (Mayfield Woods Middle), Brenna O'Reilly (St. Louis School), Alyssa Kelly (St. Louis School), Rachel Richardson (Worthington School), Madison Ho (Patapsco Middle School), Samantha Giles (Patapsco Middle School), Kate Colvin (Folly Quarter Middle School), Lara Banicz (Patapsco Middle School), Taylor Currie (Folly Quarter Middle School), Chidinma Okunwugha (Elkridge Elementary), Madison Mayer (St. Louis School) and Mary Grace Goyena (St. Louis School).


The SAC U9 boys Classic Blue and Premier White teams each reached the championship finals in separate brackets of the 12-team Richmond tournament on March 2.
