Fighting underage drinking [Letter]

I am writing to you as the president of FACE-IT (Faith Activated Community Empowering Intervention Training), a not for profit corporation incorporated in the State of Maryland. The mission of this faith-based coalition is to provide educational intervention through training to prevent substance abuse among our youth and to combat addictions in Harford County. We strive to build a community of spiritual healing by empowering and supporting faith and community organizations in their service to youth and the community suffering from substance abuse and other addictions through prevention, awareness, education and training. We believe that advocacy for actions and positions consistent with these goals are an important tool in achieving our goals relative to substance abuse in Harford County.

It was observed during a compliance test for the detection of sales of alcoholic beverages to underage persons conducted by inspectors from the Harford County Liquor Control Board and law enforcement officers on Jan. 23 that out of 33 establishments 20 were in compliance (Aberdeen Liquors, Beards Hill Plaza Liquors, Bonefish Grill, Bruce Bitner's Cafe' and Grill, Carsins Run Store, El Rodeo Mexican Bar & Grill, Friendship Wine & Liquor, Half Pints Sports Pub & Grill, Italian Sensations-Bel Air, Joe's Crab Shack, La Tolteca-Churchville, Lee's Hunan Restaurant, Lemon N' Ginger Asian Grille, Northside Liquors, Pat's Pizzeria, Silver Spring Mining Company, T.G.I. Friday's, Tollgate Liquors, Venetian Palace, Zen 16 Sushi Cafe'). We would like to take this time to say "THANK YOU!" for the efforts of these establishments and all that they do to further the goal of preventing drinking among our youth in Harford County.

It was further observed on Jan. 23 that 13 establishments allowed an illegal purchase of an alcoholic beverage by an underage person. These 13 establishments are Amin 7-Eleven Convenience Store-Aberdeen, Chili's Grill & Bar, Festival Spirits & Wine, Good Time Liquors, Grumpy's Bar & Grille, Ice House Liquors, Island Liquors, Northside Liquors, Riverside Pizzeria, Sapore de Mare, Steel Horse Pit Beef, Winters Run Inn and Woodbridge Liquors. We are disappointed with this action at these establishments.

We, as an informed community, must join forces to protect our youth from the perils of underage drinking. It is our strong desire that these establishments continue to commit or, in the case of those who failed the Compliance Test, re-commit to adhere to the laws of Maryland and not promote the sale of alcohol to our youth.

Carol Taylor, President
