The weekend of Nov. 15 to 17, 44 scouts and 17 adult leaders of Boy Scout Troop 238 of Hickory visited Camp John Ware at Horseshoe Scout Reservation in Cecil County. While at camp, scouts cooked, cooked and cooked some more! Scouts outdid themselves by cooking apple cobbler, pumpkin pie, steak and potatoes, pot roast, brownies, chocolate cream pie and a troop favorite, crab soup. Scouts used several methods to do their cooking, including campfire, backpack stove, kitchen oven and slow cooker.
On Saturday, the troop was visited by 14 Cub Scouts and their parents. Cub Scouts learned how to wield an ax and made grilled cheese sandwiches using a hobo stove they had made in the morning.
The troop had its annual Christmas party Dec. 12 at AMF Lanes in Rosedale with 60 scouts and parents attending.
The next big event was Operation Icicle at Broad Creek Scout Camp, held Jan. 24 to 26. A competition involving various modes of communication was attended by troops from around the area.
Troop 238 is sponsored by St Ignatius Catholic Church in Hickory. The troop meets at the Knights of Columbus in Forest Hill the first Thursday of each month and at St. Ignatius each of the other Thursdays of the month at 7 p.m.. For more information, call 410-638-0631 and leave a message.
