Police trying to locate missing Edgewood woman and 5-year-old daughter

Harford County Sheriff's Office detectives are attempting to find a "critically missing" mother and her 5 year-old daughter who left their home together on or about Jan. 10, and whose whereabouts are not known.

Neither mother nor daughter had been found as of Tuesday afternoon, Sheriff's Office spokesman Edward Hopkins said.

Hopkins said they don't suspect foul play; however, investigators want to make sure the child is safe.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Amanda Deeann Mitchell, 29, of the 2900 block of Siwanoy Drive in Edgewood, is one of the custodial parents of 5-year-old, Sanaa Elise Bailey. Mitchell has shared custody with the child's father, Aaron Chester Bailey, of Baltimore.

The father came to the Sheriff's Southern Precinct Station on Jan. 18 after Mitchell failed to drop off the child for scheduled visitation with the father on Jan. 17 and efforts to reach her were unsuccessful, the Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Family members tell police that although Mitchell has been known to stay in homeless shelters from time to time, her failure to allow visitation is atypical behavior.

At this juncture, investigators believe that for unknown reasons Mitchell has chosen not to return home with the child.

"She [Amanda] has left the family home with the bare essentials and has taken the child with her," Sheriff's Det. Tom Walsh said Friday, reiterating that they do not suspect foul play.

"We fully understand she is a custodial parent, but her behavior is out of the norm for how people have described her," Walsh said. "We have conducted an investigation and can find no reason why she would do this. We need to know that both she and the child are OK and are asking for the public's help in trying to find her."

"We still do not suspect foul play in that the mother did anything to harm the child. But, she is clearly in violation of a court order/custody agreement leading to a warrant for child abduction and crossing state lines," Det. Tammy Burns said Tuesday.

Sanaa is described a black female, about 4 feet tall and weighing 55 pounds. She has a thin build, black shoulder length braided hair pulled back in a ponytail and brown eyes.

Amanda Mitchell is a black woman, about 5 feet, five inches tall and weighing 135 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes. She drives a burgundy 2005 Mitsubishi Gallant four-door sedan with unknown license plates.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Tom Walsh, 410-836-5408, or Detective Tammy Burns, 410-836-5043.
