Fort Garrison house is big on history

History buffs and connoisseurs of properties older than 100 years should rightly assume a house has a past when its latest addition bears the cornerstone "1835."

"The main part of the house is the addition, and I want you to know we use that word loosely," said Michael Yerman of Prudential Homesale about this unusual offering at 2 Garrison Farms Court in the Pikesville subdivision of Fort Garrison.

The original house was built as caretaker and officers' quarters for soldiers assigned to Fort Garrison and dates to 1695.

Today, the original 17th-century house and the connected 19th-century addition is part of an estate on three-quarters of an acre that also includes a heated in-ground pool, a poolhouse with a great room and women's changing room (once the ice house) and a men's changing room (formerly the smokehouse). The asking price is $795,000.

"The room sizes are big but not overbearing. It's a very manageable house," Yerman said. "There's a front porch that wraps completely around what we call the new addition, and there's a wonderful overhang that I absolutely love."

Approaching the house from the circular driveway, many people mistake the imposing stone addition for the original, when it fact, it is the reverse, with the original wood and shingle-asphalt dwelling slightly back in its shadow.

A large family room is on the main level of the original house, along with a utility room, mudroom, powder room and laundry room. A master-bedroom suite is on the second level.

The addition, accessed by a breezeway, contains hardwood flooring, crown and chair molding and wainscoting. Also on this elegant main level is a living room, billiard room, dining room and kitchen. Two additional bedrooms each are found on the second and third levels.

Amenities abound in this historic time capsule. These include 9-foot ceilings, a large eat-in kitchen, double Thermador wall ovens, and a SubZero refrigerator. A gallery on the third level leads to a second master suite. Four bathrooms and one powder room feature ceramic tiling. Eight fireplaces grace the rooms' decor — three are working fireplaces, one each in the kitchen, family room and formal dining room.

The exterior has a fully fenced rear yard around the pool area for privacy.
