Field hockey

Howard Stampede

After their scoreless tie last week, the Stampede Elite team was charged with working to finish off their plays in the offensive 16. The team responded with an 8-0 victory over Fallston in the MYFHL Elite division.

Lexi Rieu and Keally Ingersoll had two goals each, Caleigh Covell, Julia Sheehan, Mary Monroe and Bridget Cavanaugh also scored. Grace Olson, Natalie Fyock and Madison Zehring added assists.

The offensive zone pressure was relentless especially in the second half with Gillian Kramer, Carly Clarke and Molly Tucker providing strong front line and midfield pressure.

On the defensive side, Megan Hooper, Gabby Cadoux and Denise Linn provided strong back line support in and around the defensive 16 that enabled Noelle Frost to notch her third straight shutout of the season.

Columbia Soccer Club travel

On Sunday, the CSC Storm Runners (U-16 girls) traveled to New Carrollton to play the New Carrolton Soccer Association Fusion. Both teams entered the game undefeated. As the game unfolded the different philosophies of the two teams quickly became apparent with the Storm Runners using passing and movement to gain the advantage while the Fusion used its superior physical size to try to disrupt play.

Despite these efforts the Storm Runners quickly tallied the first goal when forward Christina Kochanski played a direct kick to Kate Harkleroad who one timed the shot past a surprised Fusion defense. The lead was soon doubled when Kochanski once again was over the ball on a direct kick. This time she played the ball over the defensive wall to a waiting Selena Chin who chested down the chip and calmly knocked home a left-footed shot.

Twice more the Storm Runners struck before halftime — midfielder Jenny Haynes showed her shooting prowess when as she curled a 20-yard blast into the lower left corner of the net and, finally, Jonae Queen finished off the scoring when she headed home a cross from Makenzie Rynn to make the halftime score, 4-0.

Line-up changes by the Storm Runners did not change the balance of play in the second half. First half goalie Elaina Quinn and sweeper Tory LeFemina moved to the front line and both notched goals. LaFemina's goal came after a perfectly placed pass from Natalie Chin. Quinn, the newest Storm Runner, played solidly at midfield after shutting out the Fusion in the first half. Her good play culminated in her first Storm Runner goal when she struck a hard low shot that could not be handled by the Fusion keeper.

Carley Noppinger played goalie in the second half. Her excellent play was highlighted by stopping two penalty kicks which preserved the shutout.

The defense in front of Quinn and Noppinger was its usual solid self. Despite being at a size disadvantage, defenders LaFemina, Becca Riley, Kennedy Citro, Erica Noppinger and Erica Sadler frustrated the Fusion forwards throughout the match.

The midfield, led by Haynes, Selena Chin, Harkleroad and Katherine MacKie, was brilliant from the outset, forcing the Fusion players to chase perfectly placed passes and beating the Fusion to every loose ball.

The front line of Kochanski, Natalie Chin, Queen, Rynn and Sarah Levin spent the majority of the game in the Fusion end, maintaining possession and unleashing a barrage of shots that resulted in the 6-0 final score. The victory leaves the Storm Runners on the top of the standings with a 2-0 record in their Baltimore Beltway Soccer League season.

Soccer Association of Columbia travel

The SAC Girls U-9 White enjoyed a successful weekend beating Bethesda White on Saturday, 8-0, and tying the Freedom Soccer Club, 2-2, on Sunday.

On Saturday, Caroline Duffy scored off a rebound from the post off a shot by Micaela Blackburn and Jillian Ingram carried the ball through the middle before slotting one home. Morgan Pinckney scored a nice goal off a beautiful pass from Remi Rollins, who added a goal herself late in the game.

Morgan Choe, Jordyn Choe, and Samantha Smedley had some bone-crunching tackles to break up opposing attacks and begin attacks for their own team. Ally Clearfield, Carmela D'Antuono and Alayna Lynchard were busy controlling the midfield and providing service to the attack.

On Sunday, SAC White showed great determination and character by rallying from a two-goal deficit to the tie the game late. Rollins scored the first goal when she carried the ball up the right wing, cut towards goal, and fired home a shot to the far side netting. Clearfield scored the tying goal when she pounced on a ball in the box and put it by the keeper.

Thunder Soccer Club travel

In an evenly matched game, TSC Napoli (U-12 boys) defeated the Central Carroll Dynamo, 1-0, with Patrick Blackburn assisting the goal made by Evan Yagel.

A huge defensive effort by Jackson Hughes, Nick D'Anna and Tim Russell shut down all of Central Carroll's attacks. The victory leaves Thunder Napoli tied for first place in their Baltimore Beltway Soccer League division.
