It breaks my heart to see what's become of our town

My condolences to the families of any victims of crimes and the alleged perpetrators. Everyone loses in a homicide. I am ashamed that the slayings that took place this week have occurred in my lovely town, Columbia.

I am a longtime resident of Columbia. My mom moved us out here in 1968. Columbia was never perfect but was safe. Now it is sad to see that hard-working people scrape together the way to bring their families here for a better life. Here you could walk, ride or run the bike paths at any time of day. Now our youth assaulting people at knifepoint or gunpoint on the bike paths or on Tamar Drive, Twin Rivers Road or Harpers Farm Road.

Why are we so angry and ill-mannered? Why are the children of these hard-working people raised to wreck havoc on our community? Is youth really wasted on the young? What are we not doing in our schools or our community centers, our teen centers?
