Football

The CCC Warriors football program has a few openings for ages 8-11 for tackle football for the fall season. Go to http://www.cccwarriors.com or call 410-637-5999.

 

Basketball

The Western Howard County Force youth travel teams will have tryouts in September for the upcoming winter season for girls and boys fourth- through eighth-grade teams. Go to whcybasketball.com for the tryout schedule. (Click on the appropriate travel team in lower left of home page for schedule.)

 

Softball

Registration is open for ages 5-17 for the HCYP girls fastpitch fall season. This is an instructional program for 8-U, 10-U and 12-U players and includes a competitive older league primarily for high school players not playing year-round, but looking toward spring tryouts. Register at http://www.hcyp.org or print out a registration form to mail in with a check.

 

Ice hockey

The Howard Huskies new Cross-Ice program starts Mon., Aug. 29 and runs through February. The program is for ages 8 and younger and there are three on-ice sessions a week. Cost: $395. Free loaner equipment is available. Go to http://www.howardhuskies.org.

 

Field hockey

The Spitfire Field Hockey Club will continue tryouts for its winter indoor U-16 and U-19 tournament teams Sept. 11, 3-5 p.m., at Garrison Forest School. Cost: $25. The team plays in local and national tournaments from November through March. The club also offers fall preseason indoor skills training for U-12 and U-14 boys and girls. Running

The second annual Valley Mede Fun Run and 5k CureSearch race will be held Sept. 5 in Cypressmede Park, Ellicott City. The race, which starts at 9:15 a.m., will benefit CureSearch, an organization that supports children's cancer research. Entry fees: $25 (family of four or more), $10 (adults and children 11 and older), $5 (children 10 and younger). Register at curesearch.kintera.org/personalfundriaser/matty. The Jimmy K 5k and one-mile walk will be held Sept. 17 at Mount St. Joseph High School. Proceeds from the race will benefit the MSJ Jimmy Knighton Scholarship Fund. Register online at http://www.charmcityrun.com or call 410-579-1716.

 

The eighth annual Knights of Columbus 10k run is scheduled for Sept. 3, 8 a.m., at the Shrine of St. Anthony, 12290 Folly Quarter Road, Ellicott City. This annual charity race is organized by the Knights of Columbus St. Louis the King Council No. 11898 of St. Louis Parish and helps support local charities, including the Arc of Howard County and FISH of Howard County. Bullseye Running is hosting a 9k Around the Fairway Nov. 5. This is a new fun event running the golf cart path at the Timbers at Troy golf course with a brunch in the clubhouse to follow. Go to http://www.bullseyerunning.com.

 

The CrossLife Community Church is sponsoring a Summer's End 5k Family Run/Walk, Sept. 18 at 8 a.m. Cost: $20 per person, $10 for children younger than 12; $40 (families of four or more). All of the proceeds will benefit the Elkridge Food Pantry. Go to summersend5k.org.

 

Cheerleading

Baseball

The 13-U Savage baseball team will hold tryouts Sat., Aug. 27 at 10 a.m. at Savage Park, field 5. Email timkaths@verizon.net.

 

AYRA baseball is adding two new travel programs for the 2012 season. Tryouts for the 10-U team will be held Aug. 27 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at Hammond Middle School. The HCYP Raiders travel baseball program is sponsoring 20 teams from 8-U to 19-U for the 2012 season. Highlights for the 2012 season are HCYP's return to 8-U baseball, two 12-U Cooperstown teams, an 18-U college prep team in the Eddie Brooks League and two American Legion team affiliations. Golf

The 18th annual Athelas Charity Golf Classic is scheduled for Sept. 19 at Willow Springs Golf Course. Athelas Institute is a nonprofit human service agency serving adults with intellectual disabilities for more than 35 years. The goal is to raise funds, which will help provide opportunities for over 400 adults supported by Athelas Institute. A shotgun start is scheduled at 9 a.m.; the format is captain's choice and prizes will be awarded for closest to the pin, longest drive and best team score. Cost: $100 (individual); $380 (foursome). Special needs

Sports Plus is offering special needs soccer Saturdays, Sept. 17-Oct. 29, 9-10 a.m., at Talbott Springs Elementary School, in Columbia. A track, field and fitness program will be held those same days from 10-11 a.m., also at Talbott Springs. Sports Plus program are for verbal children ages 5-14 who are able to follow simple directions and who have mild to moderate autistic spectrum disorders, ADD/ADHD and other developmental disabilities.
